A History of Musical Excellence


The Hamilton High School West Hornet Band has had a proud heritage of musical excellence since the school’s beginnings. Back then, we were know as just Hamilton High School, and the school proudly opened its doors on South Clinton Avenue for the first time on Monday, September 8, 1930.


The first Band Director at Hamilton High School was Mr. Harlan D. Darling, a young man with a great passion for musical excellence. What a fitting way to start one of the great band programs in New Jersey! Mr. Darling’s first band started with sixty-two members, and of a wide-ranging instrumentation. In addition to the Concert and Marching Band, a Dance Band was eventually added (which has become the Hamilton High West Jazz Band today), as well as an Orchestra.


We sincerely salute Mr. Darling, and the following Hamilton West Band Directors for their contributions to keep this program the “Pride of Mercer County” for all these years:
